To tell when Nam Dok Mai is ready to eat, look for these signs:

🥭 1. Color

  • Skin turns golden yellow (may still have a little green near the tip).
  • Avoid fully green fruit unless you plan to ripen it at home.

🤲 2. Feel (Most Important)

  • Gently squeeze it.
  • It should feel slightly soft, like a ripe avocado.
  • Too hard = not ready.
  • Very mushy = overripe.

👃 3. Smell

  • Smell near the stem end.
  • A ripe one has a sweet, floral fragrance.

👀 4. Wrinkles

  • Small wrinkles near the stem can mean it’s very sweet and ready.
  • Large shriveled skin may mean it’s overripe.

⏳ If It’s Not Ripe Yet

  • Leave at room temperature for 1–3 days.
  • To speed up ripening, place it in a paper bag.
  • Once ripe, store in the refrigerator to slow further ripening.
